In the New York Times today, Edward Rothstein asks “If Books are on Google, Who Gains and Who Loses?” He points out that technology “doesn’t make things easy; it makes them unpredictable.”

He also mentions that the New York Public Library is sponsoring a smackdown this Thursday at 7 pm. If anyone is able to attend, please send us a report!

Great! Thanks for the info… I hope it will be archived. I’ll have to catch it later since we have a speaker here tonight – Jane Kirtley on freedom of the press. Part of our September Project programs.

Here’s what LJ Academic Newswire has to say about the event – in their nice, new web format; and here’s what Edward Wyatt, who covers publishing for the Times, has to say.

And for a blow-by-blow account, since the webcast seems to have not quite worked, here’s a live blogger’s take on it. Too bad he can’t share the champaign with us online.
