I agree. I attended my first state library convention this week (tho' I've been working in a library for 13 years), and it was very interesting. I had a long talk with a former student who's working for the NIH, touting PubMed at conferences, among other things. She told me about some upcoming PubMed training on toxicology that I wouldn't have heard about otherwise. I also spoke with a librarian from a local hospital who assured me that they fully participate in ILL and are happy to help patrons with all types of health questions. Again, something I wouldn't have known if I'd stayed in my academic tower.

Conference-goers were predominently from public libraries, but I enjoyed thinking about our profession from another perspective, again outside of the academic tower.

Thanks for the topic -- it's a good reminder to "play local" in addition to spending time with national colleagues.
