Great writeup, Sarah! I really enjoyed the Institute, and it was definitely thought-provoking. It was interesting to hear the discussion about the different generations. Like Joan, I'm Gen X in age but still a newbie librarian, so I often feel like I don't really fit under any of those labels. I was glad to hear that I'm not the only one who's a bit caught in between.

In librarianship, more meaningful than people's birth year seems to be their graduation year. I find my closest colleagues are often Gen Xers, like me, but also boomers and millenials who finished up library school relatively recently. We may bring different generational tendencies, but our training was librarians was similar.

I agree that mentoring is essential, or at least it has been for me. I still call on the excellent librarians I worked with while I was in library school, and the knowledge I learned from them forms much of my practice.

This sounds like it was a very interesting discussion. I hace been wondering recently, what the future of libraries are. In my uni library machines do pretty much everything- you can take a book out and place it back via a computer. Librarians seem to be fewer and further between which worrries me as I am a bit of a tech phobe and love having someone to talk to and to get help and advise from.
